B.U.G (Brinsea® User Group) Newsletter - November 2010

Welcome to our November Newsletter.

Thanksgiving is just round the corner and this is the perfect time to reflect on how grateful we are for the loved ones we have in our lives including our feathered friends who can have unsuspected beneficial influences on our lives.

Linda's first hatch in a Mini Advance egg incubator
Find out why you should raise your own chickens

Linda Olmstead told us recently: I originally got chickens for these reasons in this order: free fertilizer for raised garden beds, bug control, and oh, yes, they do lay eggs, don't they! That's a great bonus. I never expected chickens to have individual personalities, though. That fact has now become #1 on my list of reasons to increase my flock size. Spending time with the chickens has reduced my blood pressure enough for my physician to lower the dosage on my prescription!

Isn't it wonderful?! Linda started keeping chickens last October and investigated incubators in the summer when one of her hens went broody. Like many she was hooked very quickly and is now the proud owner of a Mini Advance, 2 Mini Advance EX and 3 Octagon® 20 Advance EX!

New EcoGlow Chick Brooder Did you win?

Congratulations to Tracey McInerney. She's the lucky winner of our EcoGlow contest on Facebook last month. Hope she likes it as much as Cindy and Lisa. Thank you everybody for all the nice comments and better luck next time!

Cindy Duppong - I got one earlier this year and the chicks love it. I feel it is safer than the hanging heat lamps too and the Ecoglow just seemed to keep them cozier.

Lisa Delien Murano - Honestly.....everybody needs to buy one! You will be amazed how fast the chicks learn to use it. It's absolutely wonderful! Plus, my electric bill went down since I switched from a heat lamp. It pays for itself! would love another one ;-)

Eggs hatching in a Mini incubator at Ed Expo 2010If you live close to San Antonio we need your help

From April 7 to 9 2011 we will be exhibiting in San Antonio convention center at the Ed Expo trade show. We will be demonstrating how our Mini Advance incubator, OvaScope egg candler and EcoGlow chick brooder can be used in classrooms and we need hatching eggs.

For several years now we have been hatching live chicks at this show but this was only possible because it had been in driving distance.

This year we will be flying to San Antonio but still need to hatch chicks at the show and are hoping that you can help us.

On Wednesday April 6 we would need to pick up a dozen or so eggs at the point of hatching. Ideally some eggs would hatch on Thursday and some on Friday. We would also need 6 or so eggs 7 days into incubation for candling so preferably pale shelled. We would return chicks and eggs on Saturday afternoon at the end of the show.

If you think you can help or know someone who could please email pascale@brinsea.com.
