Urgent
efforts are underway to save this large and beautiful
bird from extinction. Headed by The Rare Species
Conservatory Foundation in Florida, and with the
active support of the government of Dominica, 10,000
acres of pristine rain forest are being turned into
a National Park to preserve the habitat and sole nesting
site.

Octagon 20 incubators and brooders have been
chosen for these vital conservation programs and have
been shipped to Dominica for use in a specially constructed
local facility.
The
project also includes a captive breeding program on
the island to augment the unusually slow reproductive
rate; Imperials are believed to lay only a single egg
'clutch'. Government sanctioned efforts to accelerate
reproduction by 'stealing' eggs from wild nests for
artificial incubation have failed so far because of
the extreme inaccessibility of the nest sights. Removal
of the egg is expected to encourage the birds to lay
again. Only about sixty individual birds are believed
to exist and they are all on the island of Dominica.
A
second highly endangered species, the Red Necked
Amazon will also benefit from this high profile
program.
Brinsea
incubators and brooders have been chosen for this and
other vital conservation programs as diverse as the
New Zealand Kiwi, the Philippine Eagle
(the rarest eagle on Earth), and the first artificial
hatching of the Royal Albatross.
