American firsts at Sylvan Heights
In
1982 Mike Lubbock gave up his position as Curator of Slimbridge
(the well known Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust establishment
in Gloucestershire, England). He and his wife, Ali, went
to the USA, initially to Alabama but then to North Carolina
where they founded 'Sylvian Heights Waterfowl' in a little
town called Scotland Neck, deep in cotton country, which
they have operated for the last 9 years.
They
have about 150 species, mostly waterfowl, but also emu,
pheasant and macaw. From a
total
of about 2,000 birds they reckon to produce about 1,500
young birds for sale each year.
When
they first left England they took with them three Hatchmaker
incubators and have since added a number more and, more
recently a Multihatch A (provided by a German friend
as a 'wonder of German Engineering'!). Their emu are
incubated from day one right through to hatch in the
Multihatch. All their other birds are hatched in Hatchmakers,
usually after initial incubation under bantam hens followed
by a period in large cabinet machines.

Sylvian Heights has certificates for the first ever
American artificial hatching of Freckled duck, Black-headed
duck, South Georgia Pintail and the African Whiteback,
all in Brinsea Hatchmaker incubators.
