Chickens, Eggs & Tech – How Tonya Hatched 32 Chicks with the Brinsea Ovation 56 EX Connect

At the tail end of Covid, Tonya finally moved to a little patch of land, expanded her garden and, of course, welcomed free-range chickens. What started as “pets with benefits” soon grew into a full-blown hatching adventure – powered by the Ovation 56 EX Connect and the free Brinsea Connect app.
Chickens as Pets (with Benefits!)
Tonya’s flock brings endless joy to family and neighbors alike. Little ones learned the word “chicken” as they watched Whiskers and Pretty Lady waddle across the yard, tiny feet pattering toward the back door for veggie scraps.
Taking the Next Step: Hatching at Home
Curiosity led Tonya to set 51 eggs – mostly blue, with a few olive and brown beauties. After a quick skim of the Brinsea documentation, she powered up the incubator, joined it to Wi-Fi, and let the Brinsea Connect app walk her through temperature and humidity settings.
Incubation, the High-Tech Way
Candling revealed 12 infertile eggs and one with a crack, which she removed. From then on, a glance at her phone beat climbing a ladder to peer at the digital display. Real-time data meant peace of mind at work or home.
Surprise on Hatch Day
The countdown said Friday, but Thursday morning delivered a fully dried chick – cue Christmas-morning excitement! While Tonya rushed to add the hatch mat and top up humidity, the app’s RH spike later that day signaled even more tiny arrivals. By week’s end she had 32 healthy chicks.
“I hatched 32 chicks and felt super high-tech doing it. Watching the RH spike on the app while I was at work told me more babies were on the way!”
Five eggs never fully developed and one pipped but couldn’t finish – a great overall result Tonya plans to repeat next spring when demand for chicks soars.

From the Office to the Backyard – Same Yellow Reliability
Tonya isn’t the only fan. In the Brinsea office the yellow-topped equipment is the go-to for consistently high hatch rates, often a day ahead of schedule. Now Tonya can say the same at home – with the added convenience of her phone.
